About Proton Pass

Proton Pass is a password manager made by Proton AG, the Geneva-based company that also runs Proton Mail, Proton VPN and Proton Drive. It stores logins, passkeys, secure notes and payment cards with zero-knowledge, end-to-end encryption, and fills them into websites and apps on desktop, mobile and in the browser. The apps are open source under the GPLv3 licence and have been independently audited.

What sets it apart is privacy beyond the password itself. Proton Pass can create a separate hide-my-email alias for every sign-up, so a leaked or spammed address can be switched off without changing your real inbox. The alias feature comes from SimpleLogin, which Proton acquired in 2022 before launching Pass globally in June 2023.

Key features

  • End-to-end encrypted vaults. Logins, passkeys, notes and cards are encrypted on your device; Proton states it cannot read them unless you share them.
  • Hide-my-email aliases. Ten aliases on the free plan and unlimited aliases on paid plans, with custom alias domains and extra forwarding mailboxes on Pass Plus.
  • Passkeys and a built-in authenticator. Passkeys work on every plan; paid plans store and autofill two-factor codes next to the login they belong to.
  • Dark Web Monitoring. Paid plans watch for leaked credentials, and every plan warns about weak and reused passwords.
  • Sharing and Emergency Access. Share whole vaults or send a single item as a secure link; trusted contacts can be given emergency access.
  • Developer tools. The Proton Pass CLI references secrets as pass://vault/item/field, injects them into environment variables or templates, and can act as an SSH agent. A GitHub Action loads secrets into workflows.
  • Business administration. Admin panel, security policies, activity logs, and SSO with Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace and OneLogin, with SCIM provisioning for Okta and Entra ID.

Who it is for

Proton Pass suits individuals and families who want a capable free tier and care about limiting how widely their email address spreads. It also fits small teams that already use Proton Mail or Proton VPN and want one vendor for privacy tools. Developers can keep SSH keys and API tokens in the same vault and pull them into scripts and CI pipelines with the CLI.

Pricing at a glance

  • Proton Free: $0, with unlimited logins and devices, 10 aliases, 2 vaults and passkey support.
  • Pass Plus: $2.99 per month on a 12-month plan ($35.88 billed yearly), shown as a discount from $4.99.
  • Pass Family: up to 6 users, $4.99 per month on a 12-month plan ($59.88 billed yearly).
  • Proton Unlimited: $9.99 per month on a 12-month plan, bundling Pass with Mail, Calendar, VPN and Drive.
  • Business: Pass Essentials $1.99 and Pass Professional $4.49 per user per month billed annually, minimum 3 users; Enterprise on request.

Business plans include a 14-day free trial, and personal plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. Prices are as listed at the time of writing (October 2026); check the vendor's pricing page before buying.

Things to consider

  • The free plan is limited to 2 vaults and 10 aliases; the authenticator and the CLI need a paid plan.
  • SSO, SCIM and activity logs are on Pass Professional, not on Pass Essentials.
  • Displayed personal prices are introductory rates for a 12-month term and may renew at a different price.

Getting started

  1. Create a free Proton account on the Proton Pass pricing page.
  2. Install the browser extension and the mobile app, then import passwords from your browser or previous manager.
  3. Replace weak and reused passwords and start using aliases for new sign-ups.
  4. Developers can install the CLI from the Proton Pass CLI documentation.
