About Akamai Cloud
Akamai Cloud is the public cloud of Akamai Technologies, the content delivery and security company. It grew out of Linode, one of the earliest developer-focused cloud hosts, founded in 2003 and acquired by Akamai in 2022. The Linode name lives on in Cloud Manager, the CLI and the API, while the product is now sold as Akamai Cloud and linked to Akamai's edge network.
The appeal is the one Linode was known for: plain virtual machines, a short list of managed services, published prices and good documentation, now with the backing of a large network company.
Key features
- Compute instances. Shared CPU (including the 1 GB Nanode), dedicated CPU, high-memory, premium and GPU plans, with optional backups.
- Linode Kubernetes Engine. Managed Kubernetes with a free standard control plane, an optional high-availability control plane and an Enterprise tier, plus App Platform for LKE.
- Managed Databases. MySQL and PostgreSQL clusters with one or three nodes.
- Storage. S3-compatible Object Storage, Block Storage volumes and backups.
- Networking. NodeBalancers for load balancing, Cloud Firewall, private networking and DNS Manager.
- Edge and AI. Akamai Functions and EdgeWorkers for serverless code, and GPU-based inference services.
- Automation. The Linode CLI and API, with official Terraform, Ansible, Packer, Kubernetes and Crossplane integrations on GitHub.
Who it is for
Akamai Cloud suits developers, start-ups and small businesses who want inexpensive, predictable virtual machines and Kubernetes without the sprawl of the largest clouds, and larger companies already using Akamai for delivery and security. Teams needing a wide catalogue of managed analytics or machine-learning services will find a narrower range here.
Pricing at a glance
Most services are billed hourly up to a monthly cap. Published list prices include the Nanode 1 GB at US$5 a month (US$0.0075 an hour) with 1 TB of transfer, dedicated-CPU instances from US$36 a month, managed MySQL or PostgreSQL from US$16 a month for a single node, Block Storage at US$0.10 per GB, Object Storage from US$5 a month, NodeBalancers at US$10 and an LKE high-availability control plane at US$60 a month. Jakarta and São Paulo cost more. New customers get US$100 of promotional credit. Prices as checked on 10 October 2026; confirm on the vendor's pricing page.
Things to consider
- Billing continues while resources exist. Powered-off instances are still charged until they are deleted.
- Transfer overages are extra. Outbound transfer above the pooled allowance is billed on top of monthly caps; inbound transfer is free.
- Two brand names. Documentation, tools and the console still use the Linode name alongside Akamai Cloud.
- Some regions price differently. Newer regions may use separate transfer pools and higher rates.
Getting started
- Review plans on the pricing page and sign up to claim the new-customer credit.
- Create a Nanode or shared-CPU instance in Cloud Manager and add an SSH key.
- Add a Cloud Firewall, then a NodeBalancer, volume or managed database as needed.
- Automate with the Linode CLI or Terraform, following the documentation.
