About DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean is a cloud provider aimed at developers, start-ups and small and medium-sized businesses. It offers virtual machines called Droplets, a platform-as-a-service called App Platform, managed databases, Kubernetes, object storage and GPU servers, with published monthly prices for most products.
The company focuses on a smaller, easier-to-follow product range than the largest cloud providers. Its documentation lists 16 data centres across 13 regions, including BLR1 in Bangalore, India, where Droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes, Spaces object storage and Functions are available.
Key features
- Droplets. Virtual machines in Basic, General Purpose, CPU-Optimized, Memory-Optimized and Storage-Optimized types, plus GPU Droplets for AI and graphics work.
- App Platform. Deploy code or containers without managing servers; up to three static sites are free.
- Managed databases. Hosted PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Valkey, Kafka and OpenSearch, with backups and maintenance handled by DigitalOcean.
- Kubernetes. DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS) runs managed clusters for container workloads.
- Spaces and Volumes. S3-compatible object storage and block storage volumes that attach to Droplets.
- Networking basics included. VPC networking, DNS management and cloud firewalls are offered at no charge; load balancers are paid.
- AI services. GPU Droplets and token-priced inference are listed alongside the core cloud products.
Who it is for
DigitalOcean fits individual developers, agencies and small to mid-sized teams who want predictable monthly bills and a short path from sign-up to a running server or app. It is a common choice for web applications, APIs, SaaS products and side projects, and the Bangalore region makes it practical for audiences in India.
Pricing at a glance
Prices are listed per product. Droplets start at $4/month, billed per second with a 60-second minimum and a monthly cap on bundled plans; each Droplet includes outbound transfer that starts at 500 GiB a month. App Platform is free for three static sites and starts at $5/month for containers (1 vCPU, 512 MiB). Managed Databases start at $15/month, Kubernetes at $12/month, Spaces at $5/month and Volumes at $10/month. GPU Droplets are priced per GPU per hour, from $0.76 on demand. Prices as checked on 7 October 2026; confirm on the vendor's pricing page.
Things to consider
- Narrower catalogue. DigitalOcean offers fewer specialised services than the largest clouds, so check that everything your architecture needs is available.
- Fewer regions. With 13 regions, latency and data residency options are more limited than on hyperscale providers.
- Bandwidth overages. Transfer beyond the included allowance is charged, for example $0.02 per GiB on App Platform.
- You manage Droplets. A Droplet is a plain server: updates, security hardening and backups are your job unless you use managed products.
Getting started
- Review the pricing page and create an account.
- Add an SSH key and create a project for your resources.
- Launch a small Droplet or an App Platform app in the region nearest your users, such as BLR1.
- Turn on monitoring, backups and a cloud firewall before going live.
