About Loom
Loom is a video messaging tool for work. You record your screen, your camera and your voice, and as soon as you stop, the video is ready to share as a link. The idea is to replace a meeting, a long email or a chain of chat messages with a short recording that colleagues can watch when it suits them.
Loom was founded in San Francisco in 2015 and has been part of Atlassian since 2023, so it now sits alongside Jira and Confluence. Atlassian describes it as video that moves work forward: video messages and meeting recordings that become clear context and next steps for teammates and for AI tools.
Key features
- Screen and camera recording. Record the full screen, a window, a browser tab or the camera only, with a camera bubble, virtual backgrounds and blurring of sensitive information.
- Instant sharing. Every recording gets a link that can be pasted into chat, email, a ticket or a document, and videos can be embedded in other tools.
- Comments, reactions and captions. Viewers can react with emoji and leave time-stamped comments; transcripts and closed captions are available in more than 50 languages.
- Editing. Paid plans can trim and stitch clips, remove Loom branding, add a custom thumbnail and edit a video by editing its transcript (Business + AI).
- Loom AI. Generates titles, summaries, chapters and tasks, removes filler words and silences, and can turn a recording into a written document such as a standard operating procedure or a Jira ticket.
- Meeting notes and recaps. Loom can be invited to video calls to produce recaps and action items, and can add meeting notes to Confluence.
- Screenshots. A screenshot tool captures and annotates an image and shares it by link, stored alongside videos in the workspace.
Who it is for
Loom suits distributed teams that want fewer status meetings. Engineers use it to explain a pull request or reproduce a bug, designers to talk through a mock-up, support teams to answer a customer with a walkthrough, and sales teams for personalised outreach. Founders often use it for investor updates and onboarding. Teams already on Jira and Confluence gain the most from its Atlassian integrations.

Things to consider
- The five-minute limit and 25-video cap on Starter make the free plan a trial of the workflow rather than a long-term option for regular use.
- The desktop app runs on macOS and Windows only; Linux and ChromeOS users rely on the Chrome extension, which has fewer features.
- Loom's pricing FAQ notes that buying through loom.com and atlassian.com can differ in administration and billing while the two platforms are integrated.
- AI features send transcript text to third-party processors; Loom documents this in its AI terms, which privacy-sensitive teams should read.
Getting started
- Sign up free at loom.com and install the Chrome extension or desktop app.
- Record a short walkthrough of something you would otherwise explain in a meeting.
- Share the link in Slack, email or a Jira ticket and watch the comments and viewer insights.
- Compare Business and Business + AI on the pricing page before rolling it out to a team.
