About Figma
Figma is a collaborative design platform made by Figma, Inc. It describes itself as a canvas for design, code and AI: designers, developers, product managers and marketers work in the same shared files, see each other's changes live and comment in place, instead of passing static exports back and forth.
The core product, Figma Design, is used to design and prototype interfaces for websites and apps. Around it sit several related products sold under the same plans, including FigJam for whiteboarding, Dev Mode for turning designs into code, Figma Slides for presentations, Figma Make for prompt-to-code prototypes, and Figma Sites for publishing responsive websites.
Key features
- Design and prototyping. Figma Design covers interface layout, components, variables and interactive prototypes in one file, so a design can be clicked through before anything is built.
- Real-time collaboration. Several people can edit or comment on the same file at once, which suits design reviews and handoff between product, design and engineering.
- Libraries and design systems. On paid plans teams publish shared components, styles and variables as libraries; Organization and Enterprise add shared fonts and design system analytics.
- Dev Mode. A developer view for inspecting designs and translating them into code; it is not available on the free Starter plan.
- FigJam and Figma Slides. A digital whiteboard for workshops and planning, and a tool for co-creating presentations, both included with full seats.
- AI tools and Figma Make. Figma Make turns prompts into working code prototypes. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of AI credits that varies by seat type.
- Sites, Draw and Buzz. Figma Sites publishes responsive websites, Figma Draw adds advanced vector illustration tools, and Figma Buzz produces on-brand marketing assets at scale.
Who it is for
Figma suits product designers, UX and UI teams, front-end developers who implement designs, and product managers or marketers who review and comment. Freelancers and students can start on the free plan; small product teams typically use Professional, and larger companies that need central administration, single sign-on and shared libraries across many teams look at Organization or Enterprise. Seat types (full, dev and collab) let a company pay less for people who only inspect designs or join whiteboard sessions.
Pricing at a glance
- Starter: free, with limited access to Figma products, unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates, and up to 150 AI credits a day (500 a month). Figma's help centre lists one team with one folder and up to 3 files, and 30 days of version history.
- Professional: $16 per month for a full seat, $12 for a dev seat and $3 for a collab seat (annual billing selected; monthly billing is also offered). Unlimited files and projects for a single team.
- Organization: billed annually at $55 per full seat, $25 per dev seat and $5 per collab seat per month, adding centralised administration and shared libraries and fonts.
- Enterprise: billed annually at $90 per full seat, $35 per dev seat and $5 per collab seat per month, adding custom workspaces, design system APIs and SCIM user management.

Things to consider
- The free Starter plan is limited to a small number of team files and has no Dev Mode, shared libraries or audio conversations, so it is mainly for learning and personal work.
- Seat type matters: a full seat includes all products, while dev and collab seats are cheaper but cover fewer tools. Plan your seat mix before inviting a whole company.
- AI features draw on monthly credit allowances that differ by plan and seat, so heavy use of AI tools needs budgeting.
- Figma is a hosted service; files live in Figma's cloud, so check its security and data documentation if your organisation has strict data handling rules.
Getting started
- Create a free account at figma.com and work in the browser or the desktop app.
- Start a Figma Design file from a UI kit or template to learn frames, auto layout and components.
- Invite a colleague to comment, then build a simple clickable prototype.
- Compare seat types on the pricing page before upgrading a team.
