About Mailchimp

Mailchimp is an email and SMS marketing platform owned by Intuit, the company behind QuickBooks and TurboTax. It helps businesses build an audience, send campaigns and automated emails, and track how those messages turn into sales.

It is aimed at small and growing businesses that need marketing email without a dedicated engineering team. Drag-and-drop email design, sign-up forms, landing pages and ready-made automation flows cover most needs, while integrations with shops and other tools bring in customer and purchase data.

Key features

  • Email campaigns. Template-based and custom-coded emails (custom-coded templates from Standard upwards), with scheduling on paid plans.
  • Automation flows. Up to 4 flow steps on Essentials and up to 200 flows on Standard and Premium.
  • SMS marketing. Text message campaigns alongside email from the same platform.
  • Segmentation and audiences. Audience management with segmentation; Premium adds predictive segmentation.
  • Forms and landing pages. Pop-up forms and landing pages to grow your list.
  • Testing. A/B testing on Standard and Premium; multivariate testing on Premium.
  • Integrations. More than 300 integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Canva, Zapier, Stripe and Salesforce.
  • Generative AI. AI features for content and insights, offered as a no-cost add-on on Standard and Premium.

Who it is for

Mailchimp fits solo founders, online shops, local businesses and small marketing teams that send newsletters, promotions and automated emails such as welcome series or abandoned-cart reminders. Larger teams that need unlimited seats, phone support and advanced testing can move to Premium.

Pricing at a glance

Pricing depends on the plan and on how many contacts you store. Each paid plan allows a monthly email volume that is a multiple of your contact limit.

  • Free: up to 250 contacts, 500 emails per month (250 per day), 1 seat, 1 audience, and email support for the first 30 days.
  • Essentials: sends up to 10 times your contact limit each month, 3 seats, 3 audiences, 24/7 email and chat support.
  • Standard: sends up to 12 times your contact limit, 5 seats, 5 audiences, up to 200 flows, A/B testing and generative AI features.
  • Premium: sends up to 15 times your contact limit, unlimited seats and audiences, multivariate testing, phone and priority support.

When checked, the pricing page offered 50% off for the first 12 months on paid plans. Prices are shown in local currency by region and rise with contact count, so the exact US dollar amount for your list size is on the pricing page.

Things to consider

  • The Free plan is small: 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, with support only for the first 30 days.
  • You pay for contacts stored, and overages apply if you exceed contact or send limits, so clean your list regularly.
  • Introductory discounts last 12 months; budget for the regular price after that.
  • Essentials has very limited automation (up to 4 flow steps) and no A/B testing.

Getting started

  1. Sign up on the Free plan and verify your sending domain.
  2. Import contacts who have agreed to hear from you, or add a sign-up form to your website.
  3. Connect your shop or CRM from the integrations directory.
  4. Send a first campaign and set up a welcome automation.
  5. Compare plans on the plan comparison page before upgrading.
