About Thoughtworks

Thoughtworks is a global technology consultancy founded in Chicago in 1993. It describes itself as a firm that blends design, engineering and AI expertise, and reports more than 10,000 employees across 47 offices in 18 countries, including India.

Large organisations hire Thoughtworks to modernise legacy systems and data platforms, build digital products and adopt AI with engineering discipline. Many developers also know the company through its twice-yearly Technology Radar and through books its people have written on continuous delivery, microservices and data.

Key features

  • Legacy and data modernisation. Rebuilding core systems and data foundations, including mainframe modernisation that uses generative AI.
  • Enterprise AI. AI strategy and delivery organised around three themes it calls rebuild, rewire for agents and reimagine value.
  • AI/works. Thoughtworks' agentic development platform, which it describes as combining its engineering practice with enterprise governance.
  • Product development. A 3/3/3 method that aims to take a product concept to a minimum viable product in as little as three months.
  • Software engineering and managed services. Delivery teams for build work and ongoing operation of systems.
  • Technology advisory and customer experience. Advisory services and customer experience design alongside engineering.
  • Technology Radar. A free, opinionated guide published twice a year that places techniques, platforms, tools, and languages and frameworks in four rings: Adopt, Trial, Assess and Caution. Volume 34 appeared in April 2026.

Who it is for

Thoughtworks is aimed at large enterprises and public bodies in sectors such as financial services, retail, automotive, energy, life sciences and the public sector, usually for multi-team transformation and modernisation programmes. Start-ups and small businesses will generally find its scale and pricing suited to larger budgets, though anyone can use the Technology Radar and its published insights.

Pricing at a glance

Thoughtworks does not publish rates. Engagements range from advisory work and product builds to long-running modernisation programmes and managed services, and each is scoped and priced through its sales team. Prices as checked on 7 October 2026; confirm on the vendor's pricing page.

Things to consider

  • Enterprise scale. The firm is built for large programmes; small fixed-scope jobs are rarely its focus.
  • Partner ecosystem. It partners with AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Databricks and Snowflake among others; ask how platform recommendations are made for your case.
  • Proprietary accelerators. Clarify licensing and exit terms if your project uses AI/works or other Thoughtworks tooling.
  • Local presence. With offices in 18 countries, confirm which region will staff your work and in which time zone.

Getting started

  1. Read the current Technology Radar to understand the firm's engineering views.
  2. Review the services overview for the area you need.
  3. Write a brief covering the business problem, systems involved and timeline.
